Small adjustments based on real battles are usually more valuable than copying a brand-new layout every week.
Speaking of layouts, copying a popular base isn't a bad idea. In fact, many skilled players do exactly that. The difference is that they continue making small improvements after seeing how the layout performs. Trap placement, Hero positions, and a few building swaps may make a familiar design much harder to defeat.
Patience might be the most valuable strategy in Clash of Clans. The game rewards steady progress far more than rushing toward the highest Town Hall. Maximize each level as much as you reasonably can, participate in events whenever they're available, and don't worry if your village doesn't look like the ones you see on YouTube just yet.
