TH17 Clan War Base #4: Offset Town Hall with an Open Anti-Three-Star Core

Town Hall 17 Clan War Layout #4 has a surprisingly open structure for a war base. The Town Hall is pushed toward the upper half rather than sitting exactly in the middle, while the rest of the village stretches through a series of long compartments and separated defensive pockets. That immediately changes the way I would scout it. The obvious question is not simply, “How do I reach the Town Hall?” It is whether the army can reach it without leaving too much strength behind for the second half of the attack.

The upper-left edge, around ten or eleven o’clock, looks like the most natural place to begin shaping a funnel. There is enough room to remove a few outside buildings without committing the entire attack, and the wall lines seem to create a diagonal route toward the main objective. At first glance, that side may look relatively forgiving. I would still be careful with it, because clearing too much of the corner could open several competing paths at once.

That is where the base becomes interesting.

A Root Rider or other heavy ground smash could enter from the upper-left and start moving toward the Town Hall, while the Queen or supporting troops continue following buildings closer to the outside edge. For a while, both groups may look healthy. Percentage goes up, defenses fall, and the attack still feels under control. A few seconds later, though, the front line can arrive near the Town Hall without the same hero or spell support it had at the start.

That kind of split is probably one of the layout’s best defensive tools.

The core is open rather than tightly boxed. There is enough space between the key compartments for troops to change direction after the first wall break, which makes pathing more important than raw damage. A strong ground army can certainly cross the walls, but the attacker needs to keep the main force reasonably compact. Once the army spreads into separate lanes, Rage, Heal, Freeze, or other control spells become harder to use efficiently.

The Town Hall placement adds another problem. Because the objective is offset toward the upper side, a player may decide to secure it early and remove the uncertainty. That is sensible in Clan War, especially if a safe two-star result matters. The downside is how much of the army gets spent reaching it. A player who commits too many heroes, spells, or heavy troops to guarantee the Town Hall could enter the final phase with very little left for the opposite side.

This is where the anti-three-star idea becomes clearer. The base does not necessarily need to stop the Town Hall from falling. It can still defend successfully if the attacker reaches the objective and then struggles to finish the remaining defenses.

Queen Charge Hybrid may offer a more controlled answer. Starting the Queen from the upper-left could remove one defensive pocket and close off part of the funnel before Miners and Hog Riders are released. If the Queen stays on the intended path, that should make the transition into the core much cleaner.

The problem is timing. A Queen that turns toward an outside building, spends too long on a high-hitpoint target, or needs an extra wall opening can delay the Hybrid portion. That may not look disastrous immediately, but the last thirty seconds of a war attack can disappear very quickly when cleanup troops are still travelling across the map.

Air armies have their own puzzle. The Air Defenses appear to cover separate approach lanes instead of sitting in one obvious cluster, while the Inferno Towers act more like individual inner anchors. That makes it harder to remove several important threats with one neat spell sequence.

Dragons could still find a workable entry from the upper-left after the funnel is shaped. A narrow deployment is likely to be safer than spreading them across the whole edge. A wide Dragon line may look powerful initially, but some units can drift toward outside buildings while the main group fights through the center. Once the air army splits, the stronger defenses can focus on a smaller group.

LavaLoon gives the attacker better control over target order, although it requires more planning after the first Air Defense goes down. The player still has to think about the Town Hall route, the remaining Inferno coverage, and what will become the back end. Removing one threat does not appear to unlock the whole village automatically.

The lower half of the base is easy to underestimate during scouting. Several defensive buildings are packed closer together there, and that could become a serious cleanup problem if the attack reaches that section with only scattered troops. An opening can look excellent—Town Hall secured, heroes still alive, percentage already strong—and still turn into a two-star because the remaining army reaches the bottom in small groups.

That is probably what makes Layout #4 suitable for Clan War. It asks the attacker to solve three different problems: create a proper funnel, secure the offset Town Hall, and preserve enough force for the back end. Solving only the first two may not be enough.

The upper-left route remains the most obvious weakness. A disciplined attacker who removes the correct corner buildings and keeps the army together may find a fairly direct path toward the objective. If that happens without overspending spells or hero abilities, the base could open faster than intended.
