TH17 Clan War Base #8: Open Anti-Three-Star Core with an Upper-Left Funnel

Town Hall 17 Clan War Layout #8 looks fairly open when you first scout it, but the layout is not really inviting a straight-line attack. The Town Hall sits toward the upper half of the village rather than directly in the center, while the strongest defensive value is spread through several compartments around the middle. That creates an interesting war setup: reaching the main objective is one problem, but getting the surviving army through the rest of the base is another.

The upper-left edge, roughly around ten or eleven o’clock, appears to be the cleanest place to begin. There is enough room to remove a few outside structures and create a diagonal funnel without immediately committing the whole army. I would still avoid clearing too much of that side. An overly wide funnel could expose several compartments at once, giving heroes and support troops different targets before the main force has properly entered.

That pathing issue is probably one of the more important parts of the base.

Imagine a Root Rider or heavy ground smash entering from the upper-left. The front line may move toward the central defenses while the Queen follows a building closer to the outside wall. At first, the attack can look completely healthy. Both groups are destroying defenses, percentage is climbing, and nothing seems badly wrong. The difference becomes obvious later, when the attacker reaches the Town Hall area and realizes that the strongest troops and supporting heroes are no longer fighting together.

That separation makes spell timing harder. A Rage or Heal that would normally support the whole push may cover only the tanks. A Freeze might protect the Town Hall group while the Queen is dealing with another compartment. Small pathing mistakes can therefore become expensive without causing an immediate collapse.

The Town Hall itself creates a second decision. Because it is offset toward the upper side, an attacker can design a relatively direct route to secure it early. That is attractive in Clan War, especially when protecting the two-star result matters. The downside is that the main army can spend too much strength on the objective and leave a healthy back end behind.

A safe attack may take the Town Hall and produce good percentage without ever putting the triple under serious pressure. An aggressive attack can preserve more spells and troops for the second half, but then the Town Hall stays active longer and the margin for error becomes smaller. That tradeoff is exactly what makes the layout feel more like a war base than a general defensive design.

Queen Charge Hybrid looks like one of the more controlled counters. A Queen could begin from the upper-left, remove one defensive pocket, and close off part of the funnel before Miners and Hog Riders are committed. If the Queen follows the planned route, the attacker could create a much cleaner line into the core.

The problem is timing. One unexpected Queen turn, a slow high-hitpoint target, or defending Clan Castle troops could delay the Hybrid phase. The attack might still reach the Town Hall, but cleanup becomes uncomfortable when the main force starts thirty seconds later than planned.

Heavy ground armies such as Root Riders have a different advantage. They can cross the wall structure without spending the entire attack opening compartments. Even so, raw strength is not enough here. A narrow deployment is likely to work better than a broad one because the main defensive idea seems to be pulling the army into separate lanes.

Air attacks also have realistic options. The Air Defenses appear to protect crossing routes rather than one single side, while the Inferno Towers are separated enough that one perfectly placed spell will not solve both threats at once. That forces an air attacker to make decisions about target order instead of simply removing one defensive cluster and sending everything through the gap.

Dragons may find a workable entry from the upper-left once the funnel has been shaped. I would expect a tighter line to perform better than a wide deployment. Spread the Dragons across too much of the edge and some may begin following buildings around the outside while the central group moves toward the Town Hall.

LavaLoon offers more precise control over defensive targets, but it also requires a clearer plan for the second half of the attack. Destroying the first Air Defense does not appear to open the whole village. The remaining path still includes the offset Town Hall, separated Inferno coverage, and defensive pockets on the opposite side.

What makes Layout #8 interesting is that the funnel, Town Hall, and cleanup almost behave like three separate stages. An attacker can solve the first stage correctly and still lose control later. A strong entry may get the army into the center, but that does not guarantee that the troops leave the core together or finish on the right side of the village.

The most obvious weakness is the upper-left approach. A disciplined attacker who removes the correct buildings and creates a narrow path could reach the objective without spending too many resources. If enough of the army survives, the open core may become easier to finish than intended.

Still, the layout has a clear anti-three-star purpose. It is not relying on one giant central compartment or a single surprise defense. Instead, it tries to make the attacker solve the funnel, the Town Hall, and the back-end cleanup as separate problems.
